Slim Olson’s

Pictured here is the original Slim Olson’s gas station in Bountiful, Utah.

Back in the 1950s, this station was recognized as the world’s largest service station, boasting an impressive 43 pumps. Drivers in sleek Ford street rods and Chevy Cabriolets would roll in to fuel up with two grades of Amoco gas: ethyl and regular.

Today, Slim Olson’s legacy continues with the third generation of family ownership. Brothers Doug and Keith Olson now run the station, which has undergone many changes over the decades—including switching to Chevron gas in 1994 and giving the iconic buildings a fresh coat of white and blue paint.

For more than 60 years, Slim Olson Service Stations have been a vital part of the community. Though the number of stations has slimmed down, the Bountiful location remains on the same historic property, fueling the community with the same dedication that started in 1938.

We’re thrilled to announce the completion of a stunning new signage project for the Chandler Airpark Area Employment Corridor in Chandler, Arizona.

The project, initiated in early 2022, was part of Chandler’s ongoing placemaking and branding initiatives aimed at enhancing the identity of key areas. The City of Chandler engaged YESCO to design and construct seven new displays, strategically located throughout the airpark to highlight the area’s importance and provide clear, impactful wayfinding.

The design process began with a series of conceptual options created by YESCO’s design director Mark Ritenour, which were reviewed and refined in close collaboration with the city’s economic development team. Design options were then presented to the city leadership and stakeholder groups to receive feedback and community buy-in. A final design was selected that incorporates the city’s branding while evoking an aviation theme fitting for the Chandler Airpark Area. The design’s modern aesthetic, includes unique metal swooshes that complement the fixed-height lettering on the signs.

“We initiated this project with the goal of enhancing the Chandler Airpark Area’s brand identity and sense of place,” said Michael Winer, City of Chandler Economic Development Project Manager. “YESCO understood this goal and we are thrilled with how the signs turned out. It was a pleasure working with Kelly Chipman, our account rep, and the rest of the YESCO team.”

FUN FACTS:
● YESCO created a custom slab footing with bolt-on supports, ensuring the signage can be relocated in the future if necessary.
● The signs use reflective lettering to help them be visible in the evening without the need to install and maintain electric illumination.
● The project took approximately 1485 man-hours of labor to complete.

“This project was an exciting opportunity for YESCO to blend functionality with artful design,” said Jeff Young, executive vice president, YESCO. “Creating signage that not only stands out but also serves the evolving needs of the Chandler Airpark was a fulfilling challenge.”
